I think we can all agree John Duffy of Belli is a worthy winner of the Rotary Club of Nambour Christmas raffle.

Rotary’s Russ Stephenson told the Gazette John was shopping in Nambour the day before he was informed of his win. “An old lady at the checkout in front of him was having some trouble,” Russ said.

“She didn’t have any cash on her and couldn’t get her credit card to work. John could see that she was flustered and distressed. He also noted her frugal shopping so he passed over his credit card and paid the lady’s bill.”

The store manager shook John’s hand and thanked him for his generous act. “When he paid for his own groceries and left the store, the woman had been waiting outside for him and gave him a big hug,” said Russ.

“She told the sad story of recently losing her husband and how she was not coping very well. John shared the spirit of Christmas in a beautiful gesture and reckons that his winning third prize was karma. He is right!”

When asked if he had any grandchildren to share the toys in the prize, John said he didn’t, but he knew of kids who would be given the toys.

All prize winners of the Rotary Club of Nambour Christmas Raffle shared the joy with the young people in their community. Proceeds of the raffle support Rotary youth programs which particularly help those who are disadvantaged. The winners’ family and friends enjoyed over $3500 worth of gifts and vouchers, generously donated by Nambour businesses.

The First Prize of a wheelbarrow overflowing with goodies was won by Judy Hankinson of  Maleny.

The Second Prize of a one hour scenic flight for three people over the Sunshine Coast and hinterland was won by Cheryl Moore of Palmwoods.

“Christmas is the season of Goodwill and generous supporters of the Rotary Club of Nambour Christmas Raffle contribute towards a better Nambour and District community, better equipping our young people for safe, happy, productive and fulfilling lives, and bringing joy to the worthy winners,” said Russ. “We all share in the Goodwill of the Season. May 2021 be a memorable year for us all, and for all the right reasons.”
