School’s out! Time for a good, old-fashioned dance party!

The year is almost over so it’s time to reflect on some better ones.

This year has certainly been one for the history books. Thanks to the hard work of our teachers, children have continued to gain important knowledge and skills despite the challenging climate.

But in all the academic goodness of the Australian National Curriculum, somehow, global dance culture didn’t make the cut. That’s blasphemous according to Johannh Morris and Georgia Grayson from Lonely Boot Creations. “This leaves our children entirely lacking in pop-culture prowess,” they joked.

“Do the little ones in your life know Elton John from Elvis? Do they think The Supremes are a pizza variety? Or that The Batman is Spiderman’s lame cousin?”

The pair wonder what a tragedy it would be for our children not to know the joy of disco pointing along with the Bee Gees, or the thrill of the moonwalk. Peddling just that, the new Retro Kids school holiday dance sessions, produced by Lonely Boot Creations, are all about joyful dance experiences.

Each session is three hours of another decade, giving children a feel for what life was like for their parents and grandparents.

“I want to bring my grandchildren to an 80s class,” said Claire from Palmwoods.

Children will learn how people danced back in the day. But more than that, the session covers the slang, fashion, and pop culture icons of each era, a truly well-rounded education. “We’re tackling the 90s (sadly, that is retro now), 80s, 70s, and 60s,” said Georgia.

“It’s the perfect chance to dress up. Hello leg warmers! And to exercise their minds and their bodies, old school style!”

Johannah and Georgia saw a need for the program as they reflected on the joys of living room dance parties, shared movie references, and ridiculous retro fashion in their own childhoods. “Growing up, knowing Footloose from Flashdance made my family prouder than any grade ever could,” Georgia laughed.

For a good old-fashioned dance party, bring your children along to one or more of the Retro Kids school holiday dance sessions in Palmwoods, Maroochydore, or Cooroy, December 13 - 19. Check out www.lonelybootcreations.com.
