Toad race raises funds for mums

Fifteen thoroughbred cane toads contested the Nambour Cup — the race that stops the region  —  an annual fundraiser to help teenage mums stay in school.

Member for Fairfax Ted O’Brien launched the Nambour Cup in 2014 and has remained one of it’s staunchest supporters.

“The Nambour Cup is a fun way to raise awareness and funds for the STEMM program and the important work it does,” said Mr O’Brien. “There is no more important work than being a mum and it is wonderful to see these young women being supported in this role. This year, $1300 has been raised thanks to the generosity of local businesses, who once again put their hands in their pockets and sponsored a toad, even though this year has been extremely challenging for many of them as well. One hundred percent of the funds raised go to STEMM.”

Founder and Co-ordinator of STEMM (Supporting Teenagers with Education, Mothering and Mentoring),  Jacqui Deane explained “a lot of teenage mums don’t have family support and it is difficult for them to learn to be a mum if they don’t have someone to show them. There are not a lot of wrap-around services offered to teenage mums and STEMM is one of the few,” she said. “We support young mums not only with parenting and education, but also housing, when they are in financial distress, or in domestic violence situations, which we saw increase during COVID.”

The STEMM program operates out of Burnside State High School, where the race was held.

This year’s field included “Gazza” from the Sunshine Valley Gazette, Stalwart Brewing Co’s “Stal Warts”,  Uptown Hair Studio’s “Uptown Girl”, and TramCo’s “Tram Co Flyer”. But the winner was Rogo’s Rocket.

STEMM Coordinator Jacqui Deane said the Nambour Cup was always a hit with the girls, even if it did elicit a few squeals.

“We all really appreciate the community getting behind the girls like this,” Ms Deane said.

“The funds raised help us cover the costs of our breakfast program, the creche which is really important to the girls, and providing a school bus.”
