Community feedback guides streetcape
During November Council asked the Woombye community what they loved about Blackall Street and what could be improved.
Feedback was received from 225 people and these responses will help Council’s placemaking team create a shared vision for the street.
A community streetscape workshop is anticipated to take place mid-March. Anyone who lodged a survey and gave an email address will receive an invitation from Council.
Details will be posted on the Woombye Community and Business Association’s Facebook page as they are finalised. “We will also set aside time at our monthly meeting to discuss any aspects,” said WCBA Vice-president Grant Palethorpe.
Maintain Heritage charm
Feedback from Council’s community engagement program indicates Woombye residents want to create an attractive and vibrant town centre while retaining and enhancing its heritage charm.
They want to enhance the street with improvements that retain the existing character as a picturesque heritage town characterised by large shady trees, quaint local shops with a strong sense of community.
Suggestions included creating a central space for people to gather and come together for events and creating places to sit, relax and enjoy the atmosphere and character of the main street.
Other suggestions:
• More planting of shady street trees and gardens in keeping with current plantings.
• Add vibrancy and interest with artworks and interpretive elements that reference Woombye’s heritage.
• Encourage outdoor dining to support local businesses.
• Create a cool, shady and green street that connects the western end of town to the central shops
• Improve pedestrian connectivity by providing new pedestrian crossings and improving safety at existing crossings.
