Woombye Pairs attracts keen interest
The inaugural Open Pairs two-day competition at the Woombye Bowls Club reaped a full green of bowlers over the weekend, attracting competitors from all over the Sunshine Coast, Brisbane and Darling Downs.
The brainchild of the Club’s Games Director Shane Krause, the competition attracted 48 players across 24 teams.
On Saturday the teams competed for their place in the prize divisions for Sunday.
The top four winning teams were up for the grand $800 prize for first place, $600 for second, $400 for third and $200 for fourth.
There were also prizes up for divisions two to six.
Krause said there was positive feedback for the weekend with bowlers keen to sign-up for the 2022 competition.
“The weather was great, the camaraderie was outstanding and it was a great two days of bowling for everyone involved,” he said.
“Our local greens keeper Geoff Steele needs a round of applause because all bowlers commented on how beautiful our Woombye greens.
“He maintained our greens immaculate over the entire weekend and continues to keep the Woombye greens as one of the best on the Sunshine Coast, if not Queensland itself.”
The winners for the day commented how awesome the concept of the competition was.
While local bowls prizes are minimal, they play for the love of the game, this event handed our more cash prizes for divisions ever known for local competition.
“The concept was awesome,” said first division winner Chris Harper.
“It’s the first time I have played anything like it and Peter Nixon and I are definitely signing up for next year’s comp.
“We really have to thank our sponsors for making it happen, not to mention our volunteers at the Club and our supporters.”
Winners for the day:
1st: Chris Harper and Peter Nixon.
2nd: Roachy and Jamie Bartle.
3rd: Wayne Knetter and Doug Tognolini.
4th: Shane Krause and Tony Green.
