Black belt teaches the ‘gentle art’ of jiu jitsu

Dean Liebenberg and Dion Binnie are expanding the jiu jitsu academy “Vermelho” in Yandina. “Our goal is to make it to the 2024 World Championships in the USA.”

Dean Liebenberg is making a difference in the minds and bodies of young jiu jitsu devotees at his Vermelho studio in Yandina.

Jiu Jitsu — also known as “the gentle art” — is a ground-based martial art using the principals of leverage, angles, pressure and timing to control an opponent and force him or her to submit.

One of the fastest growing forms of martial arts, jiu jitsu is a non-violent form of self-defense. Described as “controlled violence”, it enables a smaller person to beat someone bigger.

Dean is one of Australia’s highest ranked and most accomplished  jiu jitsu practitioners. The second degree black belt has medalled at world championships and European championships, Pan Ams and the Abu Dhabi World Pro.

After 16 years training, competing and coaching around the world, Dean recently decided to move back to his hometown to raise his family and teach a new generation of world class jiu jitsu grappling athletes.

He will specialise in grappling (ground fighting). And he has partnered with two-time Queensland and Australian Thai Kickboxing Champion Dion Binnie who offers  striking training. Striking takes place on the feet and includes punches, kicks, elbows and knees, depending on the ruleset.

After launching Vermelho just over a year ago the pair plan to double the studio’s size over the Christmas holidays.

“Jiu jitsu is extremely technical and akin to playing chess but with moving human body parts,” said Dean.

“You have to think many moves ahead with calculated and perfectly executed measures and counter measures.

“Simply put, it is a great way to work out your body and your mind, whether you’re an adult or a child.

“It is a truly lifelong journey of learning and mastery.”

Dean said  jiu jitsu was one of the world’s fastest growing sports with grappling promotions now becoming a mainstream part of One Championship and the UFC.

“Jiu jitsu may even be an Olympic sport by the time the 2032 Olympic games arrive at our shores,” he said.

“We provide the highest level of coaching, plus a practical self-defence system while also creating a fun environment for the students to make friends, get fit, build confidence and learn resilience — for kids and adults alike.

“Currently our kids’ program is going well with multiple medallists training in our team. And we hope to make some waves at the next state championships.

“Our goal is to make it to the 2024 World Championships in the USA.

“We absolutely love being in Yandina and welcome the whole Sunshine Coast to come in for a free trial at our Gi Jiu Jitsu, No Gi Grappling or Striking classes for you and your children.”
