The strength of a mentoring program
It takes courage to own and operate a small business. But it takes sheer grit and guts to admit things are not going how you planned so you close the doors to reform. Sharyn Perfect shares her journey in a candid interview with editor Kerry Brown.Ten years ago Sharyn Perfect started a health clinic in her home office. Until this year she wanted to separate her home from her clinic and a space in Nambour made it all possible. Sharyn's new space was much bigger and created another dimension to her business, retail as well as her existing clinic. But the retail was not what Sharyn expected and when the Nambour Alliance Mentoring Program offered help for a minimal fee to Nambour businesses Sharyn said she replied very quickly. "Initially I met with Roz, my mentor, every week and it gave me the strength and courage to make changes," Sharyn said. "Through the mentoring I could see I had moved away from the objectives I wanted to achieve in the business. Roz was so positive and she helped me to focus on what I wanted to do in the business."It took a great deal of soul-searching but finally Sharyn made the decision to temporarily close her business in October, "There is so much negativity and failure attached to a decision like this, but I have no doubt this is the best way to move forward and make the business I want a reality," Sharyn said.Sharyn will reopen in 2015 and condense her retail section while she expands the educational, nutritional and emotional aspects in her business. It has been an incredible journey for Sharyn but she is excited about 2015 and said she could never have made this positive move without the help of her mentor, Roz.Nambour Alliance executive Tim Smith said the mentoring program has been a terrific help to local business operators."We welcome interest from anyone seeking assistance or anyone offering to be a mentor in the program," Tim said.
