The Sunshine Chimes is a U3A Sunshine Coast interest group. Now boasting a full complement of 12 members, the group meets every Tuesday at 10am in the Mapleton Community Hall to play the Handchimes and fill the building with beautiful notes. 

Wendy Turton is the founder and conductor, crediting her ability to engage and lead the group with her decades of primary school music teaching. In particular, Wendy says her involvement with the Queensland Orff-Schulwerk Association gave her the skills and confidence to teach creative music with students of all ages and skills. 

It takes some coordination with each participant required to literally “chime in” according to their role in the piece. When it all comes together the sound is quite mesmerising.

“There is no audition for Handchimes participation,” said Wendy. 

Skill levels vary

“The skill level varies from those who haven’t played instruments since they were children to those who hold degrees in music — and that’s not me,” she laughed. “Many people have never had the opportunity to have formal or any music lessons so it’s wonderful to introduce them to the world of music.” 

The repertoire varies from the Great Classics through to the Beatles and the group has impressed at various public performances. 

An excursion is planned where the chimers will enjoy a performance by the Brisbane Bells, at Morningside, on March 27. 

Just as important as the music itself is the camaraderie within the group, with members supporting each other socially and maintaining good mental health through the sharing of music and laughter, followed, of course, by morning tea. Handchimes are musical instruments which are rung by hand, similar to handbells. Typically, they are tuned square tubes with an external clapper mechanism. 

Wendy said the group was looking for donations as they need to raise $4000 this year to purchase handchimes to replace the current ones which are on loan. If you can help please contact Wendy via u3aoffice@u3asunshine.org.au.
