A century of community - St Joseph’s Primary School Nambour celebrates 100 years in 2025

St Joseph’s Primary School Nambour is ringing in a momentous milestone in 2025, celebrating 100 years.

For James De Vere, a past student (1999–2006), the centenary holds special significance. Not only will he witness the unveiling of a time capsule buried 25 years ago, but he’ll also celebrate the beginning of a new chapter as his son starts Prep at the same school.

James remembers being present when the time capsule was buried as a Year 1 student, dreaming of the day it would be opened.

“Now, I’ll be sitting there with my son, Ben, who is starting Prep in 2025,” James said.

“It’s a full-circle moment, sharing this milestone with him at the very school where my journey began. Back then, I thought about how old I would be when it’s opened. St Joey’s was my father’s school, my school, and now it’s Ben’s turn.”

Ben’s journey into St Joseph’s Primary School marks the third generation of his family connected to the school.

St Joseph’s Primary School Principal Michelle Young said, “Ben’s grandfather played a part in constructing the Harmony Garden; an enduring symbol of the school’s commitment to community and care.”

“Since St Joseph’s founding by the Good Samaritan Sisters in 1925, it has been a cornerstone of faith, learning, and community in the Sunshine Coast region,” she said.

“Originally established as a boarding school for girls, St Joseph’s has evolved over the decades to embrace a co-educational model, welcoming families from all walks of life,” she said.

“The hallmark of St Joseph’s is our strength in community. We’ve seen generations of families return to this school, a testament to the enduring sense of belonging and connection that St Joseph’s offers.”

James adds “I made lifelong friends at St Joey's, several that I am still very close with today. I can only thank the strong community this school has, and I cannot wait to make friends with other parents, just like my parents did,” he said.

“In 2025 we are continuing to enact our vision that challenges us daily to embrace our faith, inspire success, and nurture relationships well into the future,” Ms Young said.

“I know St Joseph’s will continue to be a beacon of hope and stability for many more generations to come.”
