Woombye State School received an unexpected visit from a Coastal Carpet Python last Thursday, prompting a real-life biology lesson for students.

The impressively-sized snake was found coiled up against the windows of a classroom, leading to a call for local snake catcher, Dan.

Dan, who has been a professional snake catcher for two years, was quick to respond and safely removed the reptile, returning it to the bush. The school, surrounded by bushland, often experiences snake sightings, making such visits relatively common.

"The teachers are used to it," Dan said. "Better safe than sorry for the kids, who can put their hands where they probably shouldn't."

This was the second snake he removed from the school in as many days.

“There was lots of excitement from all the kids that I could see,” said Dan.

“It was a good decision to keep the kids back at a safe distance and make it short and sweet. It wasn’t the right time to get those kids overly excited about snakes. I could have been there for hours with all the questions.”
