Dunga Derby charity race fuelled by community spirit

By Cameron Outridge

Courtney Gray, representing the Dunga Derby by Rally for a Cause, recently highlighted the impact and excitement surrounding this year’s derby, set to take place from August 15 to 18. Courtney told the Nambour Chamber of Commerce Coffee Catch-up that the charity supported families and individuals affected by life-limiting medical conditions or disruptive circumstances.

“Rally for a Cause began on the Fraser Coast in 2015 and has since raised over $3 million, assisting more than 300 recipients with vital equipment and financial support,” she said. As the charity approaches its 10th year, it continues to serve the Fraser Coast and Sunshine Coast regions.

The Dunga Derby is the major fundraiser for Rally for a Cause. About 400 participants embark on a four-day adventure, traveling from the coast to the country in support of the cause. This year, a record 42 teams from the Sunshine Coast will join the event.

Courtney emphasised the crucial support the charity provided. “We help with groceries,  regos, rents, mortgages, school fees plus so much more. When your child gets sick or you face a terminal illness, the world doesn’t stop. Your bills keep coming in, and that’s where we step in to help.”

The Dunga Derby is not just a rally, it’s an adventure, with participants unaware of their route until the day of travel.

While registrations for this year’s event have closed, Gray encouraged the community to get involved next year. “You can see all the teams on our website, and if you want, you can donate to the teams. The money raised goes directly to helping families and individuals in need.”

“It’s a Charity Bush Bash,” Courtney said, “and nobody knows the route until each day when we hit the track. So that’s really, really exciting. And it’s not glamorous. You are camping in swags. Everyone’s working so hard to try and raise as much money as we possibly can for those who really need it. The money that those teams raise will go directly to helping families and individuals.”
