Rain brings on perfect conditions for mould

Mark Frawley has been in business 33 years. He says mould and in the home is a health hazard, especially people with respiratory problems.

With 33 years of experience under his belt, Mark Frawley of Range Carpet Care knows a thing or two about getting carpets clean.

“I generally say I ‘almost’ know what I’m doing, because every so often I get thrown a curveball,” Mark joked.

Mark and his wife Roxanne have operated their business on the Range since moving to the area in 1987.

“Over that time I have certainly learnt to read what type of result I might get, and match it with my customer’s expectations. Experience tells you what you can and can’t achieve,” Mark said. “People think I can work miracles and get extremely hard core spots and stains out but sometimes they are too set in to remove. When I tell people you can get any stain out with a Stanley knife, they generally get the picture!”

“Up here on the Range where we tend to get higher rainfall, mould is a particular problem for many people. This is why ongoing cleaning and maintenance is the key. That applies to upholstery as well. Our body oils stick to fabric, which attracts dirt and this is the perfect condition for mould and mildew to grow,” he said. “We are continually learning about the dangers of having mould in our home, especially people with respiratory problems. Dirty carpets are a health hazard.”

With allergies and sensitivities to chemicals and detergents on the rise, Mark has sourced hypo allergenic products to clean with and they have proven to be both popular and highly effective.

“I have some regular customers who can’t even use regular soaps or shampoo, or even wear perfume,” he said. “They really appreciate my hypo allergenic range because it does not trigger their allergies. I think I am the only person in the area to use these particular products. But I also have a very nice citrus based product which also does a beautiful job, smells really good and is less harsh than other chemicals because it is made with citrus peel.”

For those with four legged furry family in the house, Mark uses a high power, extremely efficient vacuum cleaner as part of his cleaning process. “I am one of those strange people who loves to see how much dirt is in the vacuum cleaner when I have finished a job,” Mark said. “It is so rewarding! And my customers are usually shocked to see how much dirt, dust and hair they have been living with. But they are always reassured that their carpets are really clean when I am done,” he said.

“When you have cleaned the same people’s carpets for 33 years, I think you can assume you must be doing something right.”
