Sandra Barnett: “The biggest joy of all is seeing the happiness that music can bring to the soul

For well over 35 years, Palmwoods’ Sandra Barnett has taught piano to people of all ages.

“I was privileged to have piano lessons from childhood through to my teenage years, and music was always an integral part of my family life,” Sandra said.

“At 20, I knew I wanted to be a piano teacher and I had a desire to study and achieve my A.Mus.A (Associate Diploma of Performance), as that was the qualification I understood most teachers held.

“Even after I had achieved my A.Mus.A, I realised that I loved learning and practising, so I continued my studies until I had acquired a teaching diploma with the Trinity College of London,” she said.

“My goal was to be qualified as the best teacher I could be.”

Sandra began teaching from her piano studio in Palmwoods at the beginning of 1986 and has since taught two hundred people how to play piano.

“It really thrills me to see the progress of each student as they ‘become a pianist’,” Sandra said.

“The benefits of learning to play a musical instrument cannot be measured, and learning about music also unlocks the mystery of notation, understanding of musical terms and the history of music. It is a very rich and deeply rewarding education.”

Sandra is mindful of each student’s personal goals and meets them ‘where they are’ on their learning journey.

“I teach towards a classical style, but I also teach people to play the music they enjoy as well,” Sandra explained.

“Exams are not necessarily for everyone, and unfortunately, I have been told too often that a student was made to take exams or compete in Eisteddfods as a child and as a result they hated the piano so much they didn’t want to play anymore. My role as a teacher is to foster student’s love of music, whatever genre they enjoy.

“Throughout my career there have been many highlights when students have excelled in their exams, in Eisteddfods, or preparing to perform at the end of year student concert for the parents.

“The biggest joy of all is seeing the happiness that music can bring to the soul, especially when you make it yourself. I always look forward to seeing my students each week for their lesson and to take them to the next step on their musical journey.”
