Tournament heralds new era of success for Palmwoods club

Tim collected the $4000 winning prize and congratulated the Palmwoods Club on a well-organised tournament.

The Hinterland – and the Palmwoods region in particular – should be proud of its 90-year-old Palmwoods Bowls Club.

There is a new positive feel about the Club.  Maybe it’s the mural on the verandah wall overlooking the rainforest area of Kolora Park (kids still call this “the train park”).

Maybe it’s the air conditioning throughout or the new chef.

Or maybe it’s the upgrading of the garden surrounds. It could be that it’s just a nice place to be for a friendly game of bowls.

The club is one of only a few that provide a $10,000 prize-money event. The last one was just completed over the October 7 and 8 weekend.

An impressive total of 28 teams of men’s 4s (including a bowler from Cunnamulla) signed up for the event.

Many quality teams from around the Sunshine Coast area, Brisbane & Fraser Coast, to just name a few, saw a Club Maroochy team skipped by Palmwood’s local Tim Parry win the main prize.

Tim collected the $4000 winning prize and congratulated the Palmwoods Club on a tournament well organised.

He acknowledged also the new concept positively. We scheduled no night games and only staged two games on Sunday, allowing visitors to get home at a reasonable hour (except the guy from Cunnamulla).

Tim also acknowledged the improvement in the playing greens and thanked everybody for everything they did to provide for such a great tournament.

Bowls president Col McKinlay led a sponsorship committee of himself, myself and Ann McDougall.

We raised over $6000 towards the prize money.

“My team, as well as new members and old all raised the bar this year,” said Col.  “Annie Lennon, a new member, obtained sponsorship of over $1000, and new and old members either provided cash or product for the raffles and prize money.”

Col acknowledged the efforts of Steve Hebberd in obtaining a new set of lawn bowls for a raffle which was won by new member Wendy Hanmer.

Col thanked sponsors Kira from My Haus Realty Palmwoods and Rob Skelton MLA for their support. Castlemaine Brewery (XXXX), Windsor Craig and Gardiner Law also assisted financially.
