Nambour’s book haven

Darren Bailey … “We have met many wonderful people over the years and it has been a great family business”.

Recent months have seen people returning to simpler pleasures like games, puzzles and reading with family.

We are fortunate that right in the centre of Nambour is one of the largest book exchanges in the country. Buying books from an exchange is one of the most cost effective ways to enjoy reading and expand your library.

The Nambour Book Exchange has been owned and operated by two generations of the Bailey family, for 35 years.

“My parents started the exchange right here in this same location, and operated it until their retirement in 2007,” said current owner, Darren Bailey.

“It is hard to say exactly how many books we have, but it is well in the order of hundreds of thousands. We have customers who come from as far as Gympie and Brisbane to exchange books, which is really gratifying,” he said.

During the recent COVID situation Darren continued to trade, and while numbers were definitely down, people continued to steadily visit the shop to exchange books or search for new ones.

“It has been a time when people have tidied and reorganised their homes, and for many it was a great opportunity to sort through their books and have a bit of a clean up,” he said.

“All kinds of people have used our exchange over the years and we basically have every category or genre you can imagine,” Darren said.

“I personally love to read and I have a pretty good handle on the books we have here in the shop. I am quite particular about taking on books that I think will be well received and that are in good condition.

“Browsing through our books is actually a really nice way to spend time. You never know what you might find.

“We have met many wonderful people over the years and it has been a great family business,” said Darren.  “It is exciting to see new businesses coming into town, bringing new ideas and fresh energy to the place. I think our business has quite a simple, nostalgic feel to it that has been a good fit for the town as well.”
