Nambour Rugby Club claims men’s and women’s minor premierships
Nambour Toads Rugby Club has secured minor premierships for Senior Women’s and Senior Men’s teams — a dual feat not achieved in the club’s history.
The teams will be vying for grand finals spots coming up at the end of August after the last competition round was held on the weekend.
The Senior Women’s team scored a 68-10 thumping of Caboolture at Nambour on Saturday.
Coach Luke Zeremis said the young side, which remained unbeaten after the 10 competition rounds, was on-song for the finals.
“I’m proud of the team,” said Luke. “The eldest is 22 and the average age is only 17 across the team. Eight of the them that ran on today are still at school.
“They’re an outstanding bunch. They do what you say. They have a great time together.
“But they also understand the balance between working hard and having fun.”
The team contains four players who were recently selected for the Queensland Country Orchids, namely Bridget Carter, Megan Prinsloo, Bek Murtagh and Allie Salter.
The Senior Men beat Maroochydore 24-5.
Men’s captain Jake Harris said a core group of players who had been together for a few years was paving the way for the success in the Cricks Volkswagen Sunshine Coast Cup. He said some young players joining the club from other teams and codes also added energy to the side.
“We’ve also had some clever coaching that suits the nature of the competition and the make-up of our team,” said Jake.
“We gain a lot of inspiration from the women’s team’s success and we have a number of exceptional volunteers behind the scenes.”
This weekend, both teams will be playing 1v2 semi finals for a place in their respective Grand Finals on Friday August 26. But if they lose they get a second chance in the knockout semi-finals next weekend.
After a dominant season, Nambour sits on top of the table in the Sunshine Coast Rugby Union Women’s Seniors competition on 49 points, 20 points clear of second-placed Caloundra on 29.
