Classic car a cut above the rest, thanks to crystal finish
It’s not just a crystal-clear paint job. It’s literally a crystal paint job.
It’s thanks to Montville Autos owner Lathan Harmston who has mastered a rare custom paint technique which “grows crystals”. The crystals form as a liquid application dries, creating intricate patterns over a chosen base coat colour.
“It’s a known technique in the industry but it’s not often used,” said Lathan. “And no wonder because it’s extremely difficult. My painter mates think I’m nuts for trying it. It can be frustrating because it doesn’t always come out first go. I tried Serge’s car four times before I was happy with it. The weather plays the biggest role in how the crystals are going to grow and where they are going to grow. It all depends on temperature and humidity. Even the panel temperature can effect whether it works or not.”
Despite the trial and error Lathan said he enjoyed the solitude and creativity of painting. “I like the peace and quiet,” he said. “Once the doors are shut, it’s just you and the car. And I’m lucky enough that Serge has quite a few cars and is into doing something different so I get to play with his ideas.”
As for car owner Serge Doumergue, he couldn’t be happier with the end result which has given his 1978 P6 Ford LTD a new lease of life. “I receive endless comments wherever I go,” Serge said. “This amazing crystal finish is a fitting tribute to the LTD which was Australia’s biggest, most luxurious car ever made. Giving an old girl a custom paint job is like giving her a beautiful new dress. People start to notice her and admire her again.”
Serge has a collection of 17 cars and is a member of the Blackall Range Horseless Carriage Club. He enjoys sharing his sought-after collection with the public at various events across the Range.
Serge said he wanted people to realise they didn’t have to go off the Range to find serious automotive expertise.
“The work Lathan is doing here is essentially world-class. And it’s right here on our doorstep. People who are seriously wealthy are paying a quarter of a million dollars to get this effect in expensive 2PAC kitchens – on their cupboards and splash-backs!
“And we have that expertise in Montville.”
