Electronics enthusiast turns entrepreneur and Megatronics becomes a Nambour staple

THIRTEEN years ago, Daniel Pirona reached a fork in life’s road.
He could continue working a safe job at a Brisbane service centre, or he could take a chance and set himself up in a new business in Nambour. He chose the latter.
“I didn’t mind the idea of being in Nambour. I’d had enough of Brisbane. I sold my home to pay for the business, moved into a little single room unit and went about setting the business up,” he said.
The business, Megatronics, which sells a range of Jaycar electronic parts and equipment and computer gear, has become a mainstay of Currie Street.
Electronics and retail was a good fit for Daniel.
“I was always interested in electronics from a young age but it’s not really what I did with my life,” he said.
“I was a fitter and turner and did a few other things but I always naturally liked the idea of having a shop.”
Daniel had been a partner in an alarm business but Megatronics is a one-man show which means he is on the floor five-and-a-half days a week serving customers.
“It’s kind of rewarding to me. I like to think I go a few extra inches to be helpful and hopefully, I achieve that,” he said.
Working in the business, and Daniel’s own problem-solving nature, keeps him up-to-date with constant changes in technology.
“Apart from having an interest, most of my information probably comes from customers,” he said.
“Someone comes in saying, ‘I’m looking for something that does this,’ and if I haven’t heard of it, I have to inform myself of that and look around and see who deals in this.”
“It’s kind of rewarding to me. I like to think I go a few extra inches to be helpful. I think that works for me here.
