A medieval re-enactment group says a growing number of people are choosing to ditch the chaos of modern life and return to a simpler time.

Medieval, Crusaders, Mercenaries and Artisans (MCMA) is a collection of like-minded individuals who come together to replicate as closely as possible what life would have been like during a Medieval time.

The group has been meeting for around two years and currently trains fortnightly at Cilento Park Nambour learning everything from the art of war to the arts and crafts of the time. 

“We have members in our group who have been in the scene for 20 years right up to others that have joined just this year,” said President Michael Geppert. 

“We accept people with all levels of interest — from people who want to just dress in period clothing and hang out at the ‘Village’ and learn medieval craft activities, right up to tournament level competition fighters. We have recently made an alliance with the Sunshine Coast Vultures. This group fight in a Buhurt competition league which is a world-wide sport. Think judo, but with armour and swords.”

MCMA recently received funding for promotion and equipment from the Sunshine Coast Council.  “This funding has also allowed us to hire a hall within Nambour’s PCYC so we can train weekly no matter the weather. We will be training together at the PCYC on Saturdays from July 16.”

MCMA attends different events throughout the year, most of which are during the cooler months. “Some are private events with other re-enactors, but we also are working towards attending the Abbey Medieval Festival at Caboolture which is on July 9 and 10,” said Michael.

Members have many different reasons for joining the group. 

“All have at least a general interest in the Medieval period but there are many facets to this. Some like history, some like the fashion, some like the crafts like weaving, textile making and metal and timber work while others enjoy the fighting and fitness,” said Treasurer Kris Johannessen. 

“Members say it gives them a chance to experience something they would not get a chance to do in their everyday lives,” said Kris. “Some enjoy the personal growth they achieve from practicing their skills.”

“Our members are all very supportive and love to share their knowledge with new members when they join and the public while at events.”
