Maleny Trail opens to the world
By Alan LandersAt least 100 people turned up last Wednesday for the official opening of the Maleny Community Precinct's sections of the Maleny Trail. The 126-hectare former farmland was purchased to create the precinct, which will be funded by selling parts of the property for residential development, and the overall project was master-planned by Sunshine Coast Council in 2010.Councillor Jenny McKay, in whose division the precinct lies, said the event was "wonderful"."At least 100 people turned up, which shows how much interest there is in this project," she said."The quality of walks is outstanding. Now we are working on plans for crossing the Obi (Creek) to Gardners Falls."The falls are a very popular spot for picnicking and swimming." We are doing the preliminary designs now, and gathering information," Cr McKay said."The focus has always been on getting to the falls."The current trails amount to 4.8km of walks and boardwalks, but this figure will increase.Council's property projects and development coordinator Richard Hill said a large group of people made the shorter, 20-minute walk around Reynolds Circuit before the famous Maleny mist began to close in."We made a few minor changes to today's event due to the weather but otherwise things went very well today," he said.More than 12,000 trees have been planted on the site to date - which does not include the planting being undertaken on the Unitywater section of the precinct.Cr McKay said a northern section of the precinct, which water management company Unitywater is preparing for trickle-down treated sewage processing, will eventually add further kilometres of trails to the overall experience."Once Unitywater comes on board their section of the trails will add another 3km of walks," she said."So there could be 7km of walks before we even get to Gardners Falls."Mayor Mark Jamieson and Member for Glass House Andrew Powell joined Friends of Pattemore House president Gail Denver and Cr McKay to officiate at the morning's event."Thanks to the combined contributions of Council, local businesses and community organisations, we now have walking trails here that will not only inspire us to get outdoors and do some all-important exercise, but also have the potential to bring more visitors to the Maleny area and our Sunshine Coast region in general,” Mayor Jamieson said.“It’s really pleasing to see such great results from a project that has received so much input from the locals here in Maleny.“They’re helping their town become an even better place to live in and visit.”PHOTOAndrew Powell, Mark Jamieson and Jenny McKay cut the opening ribbon
