Hospital mixes up the menu to help dementia sufferers

Dementia Action Week was held from 21-27 September 2020 and the team at Nambour General Hospital’s Acute Restorative Care (ARC) ward celebrated the benefits of a new menu helping to support independence at mealtimes.

The theme this year is “A little support makes a lot of Difference”. “Individuals with dementia face multiple challenges when it comes to mealtimes,” ARC dietitian Dominique Ryan said.

“Many have difficulty using cutlery and as a result require assistance to be fed, which can contribute to a loss of independence and dignity.

“Pacing behaviours are also quite common in dementia, with individuals having difficulty sitting down to a meal.”

The ARC ward is specialised to treat patients with complex behaviours resulting from dementia.

The ward has recognised the unique challenges with dementia and recently commenced a lunch time finger food menu with the support of the Sunshine Coast Hospital and Health Service’s food service team.

“We’ve started putting finger foods like mini quiches, fish fingers and meat balls on the menu,” Ms Ryan said.

“It’s so great to see patients restoring a level of dignity and independence to their lives.”
