In 1967 the International Board on Books for Young People, Switzerland, commenced the inaugural ‘International Children’s Book Day’. Hans Christian Anderson’s birthday was chosen as the date, and so it’s celebrated on April 2.

It’s timely then that Eudlo author Veronica Perez has just released her first children’s book about a very Australian mythical creature. “Blimey There’s a Bunyip!” is a rollicking, rhyming tale of misadventure starring the bunyip and a cast of friends. 

“Michael Salmon featured a bunyip in his 1972 children’s book, ‘The Monster That Ate Canberra’,” said Veronica. “However, since then a bunyip has featured in only a handful of children’s books, the most well-known being Jenny Wagner’s 1978 book, ‘The Bunyip of Berkeley’s Creek’.  For this reason I guess I shouldn’t have been surprised to learn recently that many Australian children have never heard of a bunyip.”

Veronica says, “Humour engages children in the joy of reading.” She describes her own bunyip character as more mischievous and silly, rather than monster-like. “Although he does still live in a creek, Blimey Bunyip has some traits unique to a modern-day bunyip - traits sure to provide lots of laughs.”
