Speed friendships: How Create My Tribe is revolutionising connection

In early 2021, British-born author and mother of two, Emma Key, relocated from Darwin to the Sunshine Coast. Juggling a demanding career, raising her children, and working remotely during the COVID-19 pandemic left her with little time for socialising. Recognising the challenges of building new friendships, Emma adapted the speed-dating concept to focus on platonic connections, creating a quick and enjoyable way for individuals to meet like-minded people.

“I needed a quick-fire way to meet new people who were also looking to make new friends. I shared the idea for hosting a speed-friending event on a Sunshine Coast Facebook forum and when I woke up the following morning, my phone was flooded with messages,” she said.

In August 2021, Emma founded Create My Tribe, a speed-friending movement based on the Coast. The initiative quickly gained traction, with plans to expand to every Australian state and territory by early 2022. Emma's vision for Create My Tribe is "to be the friendliest company in the world," with a mission "to make the process of finding and making friends, easier."

Speed-friending events involve participants engaging in brief, structured conversations, typically lasting around five minutes. After each interaction, individuals indicate whether they would like to exchange contact details, facilitating the formation of new friendships in a fun and efficient manner.

By offering a platform for genuine, face-to-face interactions, Create My Tribe addresses the growing need for meaningful social connections in an increasingly digital world. Emma's innovative approach has resonated with many, providing a supportive environment for individuals seeking to expand their social circles and build lasting friendships.
