Canadian folk singer singles out Nambour for special attention

Canadian folk troubadour Gordie Tentrees has been described as writing “the kind of songs Bob Dylan or Woody Guthrie might be writing if they were starting out now”.

Canadian folk troubadour Gordie Tentrees is making a special detour from his Australian schedule for an exclusive Nambour afternoon show at the Black Box Theatre on Sunday April 10.

Hosted by the popular concert series Sunday Folk, this will be Gordie’s only Queensland show in a tour that sees him cover much of New South Wales, Victoria and Tasmania.

“It’s very exciting to be hosting international performers again at Sunday Folk,” said organiser Karen Law. “Gordie has been waiting a long time to be able to play this tour and we can’t wait to welcome him to our stage. He has put together a fairly big tour of Australia but he is making a special one-off trip to Nambour just for us before turning round and heading straight to Tasmania. It’s pretty unusual  – even for a folk performer – to make Nambour their only Queensland show.”

Karen said this was a must-see show for lovers of rootsy realism from a performer who has been described as writing “the kind of songs Bob Dylan or Woody Guthrie might be writing if they were starting out now”.

“We’ve been trying to put him on for nearly two years, it’s been postponed twice but he’s very tenacious and he really wants to play in Nambour. I’m hoping we can give him the audience he deserves since he’s put so much faith in our town.”

Tentrees has played over 750 shows in 11 different countries in the past four years, winning over audiences with his honest and authentic storytelling. His latest album Mean Old World explores the songwriter’s path from foster child to foster parent. Gordie spent time in the social service system in Canada before growing up to be a school teacher and youth worker, then coming back full circle as a foster parent to an indigenous child.

This will be the first Sunday Folk of 2022 and the first with an international performer for a long time. The concert series has been running for six years at Nambour venues and promotes top folk musicians to a listening audience. It is a community event run by volunteers where all proceeds go to the musicians.

Gordie Tentrees plays at Sunday Folk on Sunday April 10.
