Camellia House, the picturesque 5.5-acre Palmwoods property boasting over 750 magnificent camellia bushes, is opening its doors for a rare opportunity on June 24 and 25.

Owners Peter and Doreen Briggs have dedicated countless hours to maintaining this historic site, which features Queensland’s largest collection of camellias, enchanting poinciana trees and mature gardens.

Over the years, the Briggs have provided generous donations to various causes. 

This year, all proceeds from the Open Day will be directed towards Autism in Children, aiming to provide respite and support for parents and children.

Doreen describes Camellia House as a hidden gem, showcasing not only the extensive collection of 750-plus camellias but also the maturity and beauty of the gardens. 

“With sasanqua, japonica, and reticulata (Camellia) varieties in full bloom during winter, the garden becomes a stunning spectacle,” she said. 

“What you’ve also got here is garden maturity, which you can’t buy. When it’s all blooming it really is quite spectacular. We have exotic fruits and lots of ‘gardens within gardens’ containing hundreds of varieties of plants.”

The property also features a century-old pineapple packing shed, magnificent historical poinciana shade trees, an ornamental lake with a ferry folly, statues and manicured lawns. 

The poincianas  are thought to be some of the oldest, if not the oldest, in Australia.

The heritage packing shed is filled with collectibles, antiques, bric-a-brac, jewelry and plants available for sale. Visitors can also indulge in a cup of freshly brewed coffee from the barista van.

Don’t miss the chance to explore Camellia House at 116 Woombye-Palmwoods Road, Palmwoods, from 9am to 4pm on June 24 and 25. Entry is $5, with all proceeds supporting  Autism in Children. Children can enter for free and toilet facilities are available to ensure a comfortable visit.
