CDC South East Queensland has been fined for its role in the tragic deaths of two young mechanics, Aaron Pitt, 25, and Lleyton Bartlett, 22, who were killed while repairing a bus on the side of Nambour Connection Road in April 2022.

Maroochydore Magistrates Court heard that towing the bus for $660 could have prevented the incident. Instead, the company directed the mechanics to conduct repairs roadside, where they were struck by a BMW. The BMW driver, Kelly Renee Liddicoat, was sentenced to six-and-a-half years for dangerous driving causing death.

The court found CDC South East Queensland guilty of failing to comply with health and safety duties. Prosecutor Sarah Lio-Willie highlighted the company’s lack of a safe procedure for roadside repairs, exposing workers to significant risks. Acting Magistrate Anna Smith acknowledged the CEO’s remorse but stressed the foreseeable nature of the danger and the need for industry change.

The company was fined $180,000, plus $1,600 in court fees, without a conviction recorded. Families of the victims expressed hopes that this case would lead to improved safety measures in the industry.
