‘Double bill’ of premières play at Black Box Nambour
Theatre fans looking for something new will have a real treat in May, when 3bCreative stage not one, but two plays. One of New Zealand’s most popular plays, Krishnan’s Dairy, will be having its first outing in the state. Joining it will be Scraps, the latest work of Nambour playwright Joy Hinckley.
Ever wondered what those Ibis are thinking about, what philosophical matters occupy their minds as they probe the muck? All is revealed in Scraps, as two Ibis in King George Square come to the realisation that history is often a bit one-sided. This short one-act play uses humour to tackle some of the gnarly aspects of how our region came to be as it is today, and the characters who played their roles in the founding of Queensland. Featuring a visit from an ancient Egyptian god, this play will ensure you never look at bin chickens in the same way again.
Following Scraps you will be treated to the exuberant and colourful Krishnan's Dairy by NZ playwrights Jacob Rajan and Justin Lewis. One of the most successful plays in New Zealand history, Krishnan’s Dairy has toured the globe, justly earning rave reviews. The play centres on the travails of a migrant couple, Gobi and Zina Krishnan, who have emigrated from India to New Zealand to start a family and run a convenience store. Juggling the demands of running a small business in a strange country, and the ordinary stresses of married life leads to endless frustrations–some comic, some not so. Woven through is the story of Shah Jahan who built the Taj Mahal as a mausoleum for his favourite wife.
Both Gobi and Zina are played by Sangita Ghodke, giving her a great opportunity to demonstrate her remarkable comedic talents and also her lived experience of being an immigrant. 3BCreative’s Anne Grant is delighted to be offering these two clever, amusing, and gently thought provoking plays in Nambour.
• This double bill starts on Friday May 31 for a limited season at the Black Box, at 80 Howard Street Nambour. Bookings are essential and may be made at www.trybooking.com/events/landing/1164047
