Woombye to remember Light Horse charge on Beersheba Day
The 2nd Light Horse Regiment–Woombye Troop will commemorate the 107th anniversary of the famous Beersheba mounted charge with their annual Beersheba Day Parade on Sunday, November 3rd. The event will kick off at 10am in the heart of Woombye, inviting the community to honour the brave men and horses of the historic 1917 battle.
On October 31, 1917, as the sun set across the Negev Desert, the Australian Light Horse Divisions launched a successful mounted charge to secure the town of Beersheba. This crucial victory was a significant moment in the Sinai Palestine Campaign of World War I, showcasing the courage and endurance of the Light Horse regiments.
Woombye Troop President Ian Malcolm extended an invitation to the community, encouraging locals to take part in the special commemoration. “We look forward to sharing the morning with the community in memory of the men and horses involved in this historic charge,” Mr Malcolm said.
The event will start with a parade through Woombye at 10am, followed by a memorial service at 10:15am in Woombye Memorial Park.
The Troop also invites ex-serving members of the Light Horse or related units to join the parade, which will assemble near Nambour Christian Church on Pine Grove Road.
Following the service, attendees can enjoy a quintessentially Australian spread of tea, damper, and Anzac biscuits at the Troop Hall.
The Troop will also display a historic collection and provide the opportunity for the public to meet the members of the Woombye Troop.
This event offers a heartfelt tribute to the courage and camaraderie of those who participated in the legendary Beersheba charge and a moment to reflect on the rich military history connected to the Sunshine Coast community.
