Sour Outcome: Maleny Dairies Snubbed in Contract Race
Member for Glass House Andrew Powell has stood with Maleny Dairies CEO Stephen Tait in questioning the Government’s procurement process on the back of a recent decision to snub Maleny Dairies for a Metro North Health and Hospital Services dairy product tender.
After initially inquiring with the Government in May 2023 regarding the current dairy contract for Metro North - that was due to be renewed in February 2024 - the Dairy submitted a tender in January this year. It wasn’t until last week they found out that they were unsuccessful.
“Nine months after making the submission, we’ve once again been unsuccessful. Nine months to spend awaiting such a substantial decision created a serious financial impact on the business, as we decided not to tender for other opportunities in case we won the Metro North contract,” said Mr Tait.
“It impacts on our business, our culture and our staff.”
While missing out on contracts can be chalked up to the cost of doing business, Maleny Dairies and the LNP are calling for a more efficient, transparent and streamlined Government procurement process.
“Four years ago, Maleny Dairies actually found themselves in the exact same situation after being encouraged to apply for the Metro North contract. They were snubbed at the finish line on that occasion too,” said Mr Powell.
“An extraordinary amount of time, money and effort goes into preparing these tender applications. So when the Government then spends nine months making a decision, it’s hard to swallow for family businesses like Maleny Dairies.”
“Private companies have their tender processes down to a fine art and this Labor Government needed to take a leaf out of their book.”
“Queensland small and family run businesses need a competent and cost-effective procurement process when dealing with the Government. One that works in partnership with them and wants to see them succeed, not one that stifles local business. Clearly, only the LNP can deliver that,” concluded Mr Powell.
