UK hair stylist Jennifer Barker was visiting a Day Spa in the Gold Coast hinterland a couple of years ago, when the thought occurred to her that “I could do this, but better.” 

And so the idea for her new business, Amaroo Day Spa was born.

“I moved to Sydney from the UK 14 years ago, and over the following years, I lost 2 hairdressing businesses to leasing issues,” Jennifer explained.

“I really didn’t like having to lease a space to run my business because you are vulnerable to that type of thing happening. 

“I also found that after a lifetime working as a hairdresser, I was experiencing a range of RSI type injuries. It all seemed like a bit of a sign to go in a different direction.”

Jennifer purchased her property in Panorama Drive, Rosemount in 2022 and set about converting the beautiful property into a Day Spa.

“The house is surrounded by trees and greenery and it is such a fabulous place for this kind of business,” Jennifer said. “Just being here is relaxing.”

Recycling is a huge passion of Jennifers, and she has made a point of fitting out and furnishing her space with recycled timbers and other products.

“I have scoured local op shops to find materials and I have targeted local companies, suppliers and artists to source everything from soaps, candles, jewellery and pottery.

Now the Day Spa is open for business and Jennifer is excited about the treatments she has designed for her clients.

“Aside from giving our clients a unique, nurturing and luxurious experience, I also understand that it needs to be affordable,” she said. “So to that end, we are offering a 2 hour package deal, because I always feel that one hour is just not enough,” Jennifer said.

The package includes infrared sauna, whose benefits include improved sleep, relaxation, relief from sore muscles, relief from joint pain such as arthritis, weight loss, clear and tighter skin and improved circulation, a session in compression boots, which also improves circulation,  and finally, on a Shakti mat, which amongst other things, helps to reduce stress and improve energy levels.

“Then you will be treated to a unique massage from our therapist, combining remedial and relaxation massage, aromatherapy and meditation. We will also be introducing hand and foot treatments and crystal therapy massage.”
