A 'Dunny with a Difference' for Kenilworth
By Kerry BrownAlmost everyone loves a 'dunny' story. Especially a dunny story that flushes visitors into town and Kenilworth is seated to design a 'Dunny with a Difference'. And this story will flush the tourists to Kenilworth to spend a penny for sure.It all started when Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson suggested some public art for Isaac Moore Park located on the main road just outside of Kenilworth. Being a riverside park it is a popular stop for visitors, but there is no public toilet, so the Kenilworth people suggested a 'dunny' was more essential than public art. Eventually it was decided to combine the two needs, and the idea to design a wee 'dunny with a difference' was born.Kenilworth resident Mary Jane Weld said the Kenilworth community is looking for innovative ideas for the building, "The facility has to be 3.6 metres above ground level due to seasonal flooding, so it has to be eye catching and high quality functional artwork.”"An international competition will call for a concept design to meet the strict requirements for a public toilet with spectacular artistic appeal; the prize is $10,000. A jury including eminent professional artists, council and local community representatives will short list 10 entries to be displayed in Kenilworth for local community feedback."Ms Weld said community response will be included in the jury's recommendations to a local committee who will endorse the winning entry.Division 10 Councillor Greg Rogerson said more than 60 people attended the free BBQ in Isaac Moore Park on Saturday, 27th June to discuss the project, "Sunshine Coast Council will fund and manage the project with a $250,000 budget to establish iconic artwork at the entry to the town," Cr Rogerson said."Council has a policy of using local suppliers wherever possible and we anticipate local businesses will benefit from the project. The design possibilities are endless and I really believe this project will be another attraction for Kenilworth."The Kenilworth Designer Dunny working Group formed to ensure the project has ongoing community involvement. They meet on a regular basis with Cr Rogerson and council officers and meetings are open to all community members.
