Be cool, give dancing a whirl

Nathan and Sarah Major of Cool Cats Rock ‘n’ Roll help people of all levels give dancing a spin

If you are struggling to find the motivation to exercise, perhaps a step back in time will do the trick.

Cool Cats Rock ‘n’ Roll dance teacher Nathan Major says his Blues, Swing, Rock ‘n’ Roll and Rockabilly classes helped people of all ages and levels dip their toes into retro-dance.

Dance is mentally and physically challenging, Nathan says, and there are social and emotional benefits.

He finds that most people learn to dance as something to enjoy with their partner, which is one of the reasons their lessons focus on couples.

“Dancing is a bonding experience and great for people who enjoy movement and music,” he said.

“Getting to enjoy this with somebody you love is just the best! Most men tend to come initially to make their wife or girlfriends happy. Many are then surprised by how much they enjoy it themselves.

“I got into the ‘blues dance styles’ because my Mum needed a dance partner for lessons.  I came along to spend time with her and then discovered I loved it! Almost 25 years later - I’m still going. Best of all, it was how I met my wife!”

Nathan and his wife Sarah aim to keep ‘retro’ dance styles vibrant. “Whether it is achieving confidence in the first figures learned, having more fun on the dance floor, or serious examination of dance mechanisms and technique, we want to help people achieve the most out of their dancing,” said Nathan.

How to get started:

Nathan is a qualified instructor (Licentiate - Australian Rock ‘n’ Roll Dancesport Council) in a variety of styles. He recommends starting with one of Cool Cats’ free introductory lessons.

Swing is on the first Monday of the month at 7pm at Woombye School of Arts (Lower Hall); or Rockabilly on the 3rd Monday of the month at 7.45pm. A partner is required. Queries phone Sarah 0402 592 253,coolcats@coolcatsrocknroll.com, www.coolcatsrocknroll.com, or find them on Facebook.
