The Australian Government has $14.4 million in funding to upgrade Steve Irwin Way between Beerwah and Landsborough.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Development Michael McCormack said the project would improve safety for the many motorists and commuters who use the road.

“These upgrades, which include road widening, centreline upgrades and audio tactile line marking, will reduce the risk of run-off road and head-on crashes,” the Deputy Prime Minister said.

“The project will also upgrade the roadside hazard treatments and deliver three right-turn lanes to deliver a safer roadside environment.

“Road safety is a priority for our government and we are continuing to deliver better quality roads in Australia to help increase connectivity.”

Federal Member for Fisher Andrew Wallace said the project would support local jobs and businesses at a time it is needed most while providing lasting infrastructure for Queensland.

“During my two Tour de Fisher rides around this community I have seen firsthand how dangerous this stretch of road is, and how desperately needed these safety upgrades are. However, this project will also have wider benefits for our community, because this funding is going to support around 58 jobs throughout construction,” Mr Wallace said.

“We know how vital it is to the community to be providing job opportunities as we recover from the pandemic, which is why we continue to deliver projects like this under our record $110 billion infrastructure pipeline.

“Construction is expected to start in January 2021 and be completed in June 2021, weather permitting.”

The $18 million Steve Irwin Way (Beerburrum and Palmview) project is jointly funded, with the Australian Government committing $14.4 million and the Queensland Government $3.6 million.
