The residents have received registered letters from the Department of Natural Resources, advising of the proposed closure and of their rights to make a submission in relation to the project.DNR signage at the site mentions the closure being for a “tower site”. There’s at least 10 homes within 300 metres of the site. The residents have until tomorrow - August 25 - to lodge formal submission addressing the proposal.The area pegged out for closure has at least one tree believed to be 200 years old and recorded as significant on the Palmwoods 2000 Heritage Tree Walk. Several other huge trees are very close by the subject area.  Caption: A resident inspects a 200 year old tree in the centre of the pegged area and in danger of being cut down to make way for an NBN tower.The road closure is almost a secondary concern based on what will eventuate if the closure proceeds.“I’m worried about my kids getting irradiated while they sleep at night,” one of the residents said.“And our property values going down because we’ll have a huge tower there, and they’re going to cut all these beautiful trees down.”Mark Wischnat, who lives just 100 metres from the tower site, said the area had in the past been cleared of weeds by Sunshine Cast Council.“They regard it as a reserve worth looking after for the benefit of these big trees so it seems contradictory that you would look after it and now propose clearing for the tower,” he said.A Department of Natural Resources spokesperson said, “No decision has been made about an application from NBN Co” for “the construction of a tower to support the NBN facility to service the surrounding community.”“The Department of Natural Resources and Mines is considering the application under the Land Act 1994 and is consulting with all interested parties, including the Sunshine Coast Regional Council and adjoining freehold land owners, the spokesperson said.“No decision will be made until that consultation process is complete.“The Department will consider all issues raised in relation to the proposal it, including a number of trees in the area.“All submitters will be notified of the outcome of the application process.”
