People will remember the Moreton Central Sugar Mill locos  carting cane  through Nambour’s Currie and Howard Streets.

Among them was the ‘Shay’ which was rebuilt in 1948 from two similar locos:  ‘Dulong’ (built in 1908) and ‘Mapleton’ (built in 1914), both of which worked on the Mapleton Tramline.

The ‘Shay’ mainly worked the Burnside line and hauled waste material from the mill down Howard Street.  Due to its slow speed, it usually worked close to the mill and away from the mainline where the other steam locos worked.  ‘Shay’ was retired at the end of 1959 and rested in various sites in and around the mill yard until eventually taking up residence at the Nambour Museum in October 2010.  

Volunteers preserved the ‘Shay’ and it will be among the locos on display at Nambour Museum’s second Trainfest to be held on Saturday July 17 from 9am to 3pm. Admission is $5 for adults and $1 for children.
